26.12.12. -   Prominent businessman who is also  Malaysian Hawkers Association Advisor Mr Hii King Chiong today once again visited the Pasar Malam site at Saberkas Commercial Centre. The main purpose of his visit is to have closer views of the roofing installation project.

The roofing installation project became the centre of discusion when part of the newly installed canopy collapsed recently due to bad weather. Miri City Council (MCC) had been entrusted to carry out the project with a cost of almost RM400,000.00 commenced early last and expected to complete January next year.

It was reported that due to heavy rain, a section of the newly installed canopies collapsed but few hawkers alleged that irresponsible act of MCC's appointed contractor was the main cause the collapse.
Since the last two days, the issue was highlighted widely in the social media especially in Facebook and Twitters. Majority of the complainant blamed MCC and their contractor.

When met at the site, Pasar Malam Saberkas Committe Chairman, Mr Adnan Mohd Yusof alleged that the whole project including its basic structure was not according to the specification as approved. Beside the implementation of the project was not properly done as the Pasar Malam committee were not briefed or informed on any changes especially in term of safety specifications.

"It’s totally out of spec, the actual spec that we agreed is like this. The whole project is not base on the spec and we blame MCC on this issue", he presented the layout plan of the project to MCC Mayor, Cr Lawrence Lai and his engineer, Mr Dennis Ng.

The Mayor who was also at the site, when asked to elaborate on the collapse said,
"There are few things need changers and the changer on the specification is for the betterment of the project", he clarified.

Mr Hii later revealed that Hii King Chiong Service Centre only assist MCC in getting the fund and has no direct involvement in the project.

He revealed, "We have no interest and we don't know who get the project. We let MCC to do the works and we just co ~ ordinate to get the large funds. I received numerous request from the hawkers and what I can do now is I will response on their plights but let us do it one by one. I can't make everyone happy but I will assure they have a better and comfortable place to earn a living".

During the visit, Mr Hii who was accompanied by Cr Lawrence Lai, Cr Hjh Lela Mohamad, MCC seniors officers and the press. Upon arrival, he was greeted by members of the Pasar Malam Committee and several members from Penjaja Bumiputera Miri Sarawak (PBMS).
