Hii King Chiong : Consolidate Ethnic Groups, Play A Part In National Unity
06.03.2015-- “I hope all members of Miri Guang Ning Association can work together to consolidate ethnic groups and play a part in social harmony and national unity in the face of new challenges.”
Dato Hii King Chiong was invited as guest-of-honour of Miri Guang Ning Association’s Chinese New Year gathering celebration, installation ceremony of newly elected committee and awarding of education incentives to members’ children. Hii was unable to attend and was represented by the president of The Federation of Miri Division Chinese Associations Sarawak, Mr Hii Teck Yun, to deliver his speech.
He said that the installation and awarding ceremonies further livened up the new year celebration. He also congratulated the newly elected president and committee members.
Hii said that Miri Guang Ning Association was a young establishment but had experienced and talented leaders. He had high confidence in the new committee and trusted them to continue that same spirit of unity to make greater contributions to the members, society and country.
He said that community work is not easy. It not only requires time and money but more importantly a dedicated heart.
“An elder once told me, enthusiasm alone is not enough, one must have a tolerant heart. One must respect other races, ethnics and religions. Lack of respect and tolerance lead to conflicts and disunity. There are some who abuse racial, religious and political subjects to create contradictions and conflicts for personal gain.”
Hii stressed that this phenomenon is not uncommon within associations and political circles. The current situation has worsened and is very worrying. Therefore, one must be cautious against being exploited into becoming an instrument in causing disunity.
“2015 is a year full of hope and also full of challenges. I am willing to face challenges together with everyone.”
He continued, “Dear friends, we are brothers and sisters, we are family. We must not differentiate between ethnics and religions because in our current family structure are members from various ethnics and religions.”
He emphasised that everyone shares one thing in common which is living together in Malaysia. Therefore, everyone shares responsibility in maintaining peace, harmony and unity of the nation.
“Dear friends, let us accept one another with mutual respect, care and encouragement. For ourselves and the next generations, let us work together to create a better tomorrow.”
